The Neptune Records is my end-of-study projects as part of Telecom SudParis' Video Games course, realised by a group of 5 over 5 months.
During the project, I was a Developer and also played the role of Story Designer.
This project, the biggest I had ever participated in by that point in terms of scale, complexity and duration, was extremely interesting. We basically had to follow the entire pipeline of a game's creation from the design phase all the way to the release phase, with a very difficult premise : granting the player the ability to change the game at will by manipulating the game's files.
As you can guess, it lead to numerous issues as we had to anticipate the actions of the player to ensure that the game would continue to function and still be completable. Because, other than being a giant sandbox game, it's also a story-driven game, where the story is the motor of the game using a copious amounts of NPCs that the player can interact with.
In that regard, I was the developer assigned to the NPCs, and I had to design their state machine as to ensure that they could react according to the player's actions, but also still allow the player's progression to occur dialogue-wise EVEN in case of files' modifications. Furthermore, I also designed and wrote the majority of the story and NPCs' dialogues, trying to cover all possibilities of the player's modifications.
Looking at the result, I am extremely pleased with the result of our work, as we managed to create a working, good looking and enjoyable game.
